The Crux 5 was born from the fastest gravel race bike ever made.

Not just because it’s the lightest. Not just because it’s our most aero. Not just because it handles dirt like a Tarmac handles pavement. But because it delivers the lowest real-world Time to Finish of any gravel bike ever made. Crux 5 turns more of your effort into pure speed—validated across real race courses, real terrain, and real riders.

When the goal is the top step, nothing in gravel gets you there faster.

  • Time to Finish: When the objective is winning races, the goal is brutally simple. Get riders to the finish line faster. For Crux 5, that meant answering one question. Does this bike reduce total race time on the fastest, hardest gravel course on Earth? To answer that, Specialized build the most comprehensive gravel race simulations ever created. The result? Crux 5 is up to 9:58* faster over Unbound (Time savings for Sofía Gómez Villafañe vs Crux 4, assuming same course conditions, and rider input as 2025 Unbound)
  • 15.2 Watts Faster: The Crux 5 is the most aerodynamic gravel race bike Specialized has ever made. Drawing directly from Tarmac SL8 learnings, and decades of aero research, every tube on Crux 5 was sculpted for speed at elite gravel race speeds.

9:58 Faster Over Unbound

So what happens when we run the Equation of Speed with:

  • 15.2 watts less aerodynamic drag
  • A 789 gram frame (56cm S-Works)
  • 6.9 kg system weight
  • Hyper-accurate surface telemetry
  • Elite rider power profiles

9:58 saved.

Racing the 2025 Unbound on a 2026 Crux 5 would save Sofía Gómez Villafañe over 9:58—purely through equipment efficiency.

This level of simulation may be unique in cycling, but not in other elite sport. Both Formula 1 and America’s Cup sailing utilize simulation extensively to benchmark and refine performance. Hyper-accurate simulation has been one of the key reasons both of these sports have seen such massive leaps in performance.

A System of Speed

Drawing directly from Tarmac SL8 learnings and decades of aero research, every tube on Crux 5 was sculpted for speed at elite gravel race speeds.

Aero Gains Breakdown:

  • Frame, fork & seatpost: 50%
  • Roval Terra Aero wheels: 30%
  • Roval Terra cockpit: 20%

*15.2 watts as spec’d with our Moving Leg Mannequin at 45 kph. Results may vary up or down depending on individual riders.

The Science Club at our Morgan Hill Innovation Center built mules—preliminary test prototypes that bonded parts of the Crux 4 with parts of the Tarmac SL8. From a Crux 4 with a Tarmac SL8 seat tube and seat post, to a full Tarmac SL8 rear end bonded to a Crux front triangle with a custom aero fork, the Science Club began to hybridize road-level aero gains with gravel-light weight savings.

All those aero gains were validated with the Moving Leg Mannequin, because being fast without a rider is meaningless.

Rider First Engineered

Every size from 49–61cm receives a specific layup based on performance metrics unique to that size—delivering stiffness, compliance, and handling that is consistent across all sizes—because every rider, regardless of height, deserves the same unparalleled performance.
