Supporting Those Who Serve Us: The Story Behind 9RunRun and the Ottawa First Responders Foundation

Every day, first responders answer the call—whether it’s a house fire, a serious collision, or a city-wide emergency, these individuals serve our communities with unwavering courage. But while they are trained to face crises, the toll it takes on their mental health can be significant and long-lasting.

This reality was the catalyst for the creation of the Ottawa First Responders Foundation (OFRF). The foundation was born out of a deeply personal conversation between founder Brenda Tirrell and a fellow firefighter after a traumatic incident. When she asked what could truly make a difference at that moment, his answer was simple but powerful:

“I would like a magnet. A magnet with ONE number to call for help.”

That request led to the realization that mental health support for first responders needs to be clearer, more accessible, and most importantly—proactive.

Too often, the system only reacts once someone is already struggling. OFRF seeks to change that by building resilience before trauma strikes, providing the tools, education, and resources to help first responders and their families recognize the signs of mental stress early and take action.

A Community Answering the Call: 9RunRun

One of the foundation’s most successful initiatives is 9RunRun, an annual community race held in Stittsville, featuring a half-marathon, a 10K, and a family-friendly 2K.

This isn’t just any race—Ottawa’s emergency services come out in full force to support and celebrate the community. Uniformed police officers, paramedics, and firefighters hand out medals, a massive Canadian flag proudly waves over the finish line, and the always-popular Chief’s Chilli Cook-Off (typically won by Fire Services) brings a festive close to the day.

For over a decade, Bushtukah has proudly sponsored 9RunRun, recognizing both the physical and mental benefits of getting people outdoors, moving, and supporting a great cause. The event perfectly blends community spirit, physical wellness, and charitable giving—all in support of those who protect us.

Making a Real Impact

Over the past five years alone, 9RunRun has helped raise over $120,000 for local charities focused on mental health, including the work done by the Ottawa First Responders Foundation.

When a crisis hits, we call them. It’s time we made sure their call for help is also answered.
