Extend Your Riding Season: Fall Cycling Tips
Don’t hang up your bike just yet; fall is one of the most rewarding times of year to ride. The air is crisp, the trails are quieter, and the scenery is unbeatable. With a few wise gear choices, you can stay comfortable and safe well into the cooler months.
Layer Up for the Season
Fall weather can be unpredictable—chilly in the morning, warm by midday, and breezy by evening. The key to staying comfortable is layering.
- Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin.
- Add a short-sleeve jersey with arm warmers for flexibility. This combo allows you to adjust easily as temperatures fluctuate.
- Top it off with a lightweight wind vest or breathable jacket—something that packs small so you can stash it in your jersey pocket when not needed.
Don’t overlook your lower half. Leg warmers are an easy, versatile solution to add warmth without retiring your favourite summer cycling shorts.
Protect Your Extremities
As temperatures drop, keeping your head, hands, and feet warm becomes essential.
- A lightweight skull cap or headband under your helmet can help retain body heat on cold mornings.
- Full-finger gloves are highly recommended, especially for longer descents or windy conditions. Even if you’re unsure, keep a pair handy—you’ll be glad you did.
- For your feet, Merino wool socks, waterproof booties, or windproof overshoes can make all the difference in preventing cold, damp discomfort.
Breathable Equals Comfortable
Even in cooler weather, you’ll work up a sweat. If that moisture gets trapped, it can cause you to feel chilled quickly. Opt for breathable, technical fabrics that wick moisture away and allow for ventilation. Leave the cotton tee for après-ride coffee.
Be Seen, Stay Safe
As daylight hours shorten, visibility becomes even more crucial.
- Wear clothing with reflective accents, especially for early morning or late afternoon rides.
Equip your bike with quality front and rear lights—and use them. Not only is it safer, but it’s also legally required within 30 minutes of sunrise and sunset (in Ontario).
